Phalacrocorax carbo

A large dark waterbird with a hefty hooked bill. They often perch on rocks with wings spread to dry. Around Lihou, they form nesting colonies on rocky ledges, diving for fish in the surrounding waters.

  • Habitat: Coastlines, estuaries, and inland waters; often perched on rocks drying wings.
  • When to See: Present year-round; more visible when roosting or drying off between dives.
  • Diet / Food: Fish
  • Length: 80-100 cm
  • Weight: 2,100-2,500 g
  • Wingspan: 130-160 cm
