IMPORTANT
The following information is to be referred to if, for whatever reason, it was deemed necessary to evacuate some or all occupants of the house back to Guernsey.
Examples of incidents that may necessitate the evacuation of all the occupants:
- A fire in the house rendering it uninhabitable
- Failure of the structure of the building in some catastrophic way so as to make it uninhabitable
- An injury being received by a minor that needed the casualty to be immediately evacuated in the company of a responsible adult and that would leave the staffing of a group containing minors levels below acceptable levels
Examples of incidents that may require partial evacuation are:
- A first aid emergency such as a serious burn or broken bone
- Asthma attack that cannot be controlled by inhaler or medication
- Some form of serious allergic reaction
For complete evacuation the following Procedure should be followed exactly step by step:
- Contact the emergency service on either 999 or 112 and ask for the relevant emergency service using a mobile phone or the emergency phone in the boiler room of the house or, in the case of a fire, the emergency phone in the ‘grab box’ situated to the rear of the property in the shed on the south western corner of the grounds
- If the building is uninhabitable due to fire, muster everyone by the ‘dew pond’ and do a head count then follow the fire instruction that are displayed in the ‘grab bag’ and in all the rooms of the house (do not return to the house in the case of a fire)
- If the building is uninhabitable due to some other structural catastrophe, then seek shelter in a safe area of the property then do a head count
- Contact the warden on 07781 120421 (mobile)
- If the causeway is covered the emergency services will automatically coordinate in an appropriate manner to evacuate everyone in a short a time as possible. This will happen by Lifeboat.
- If the causeway is uncovered, or shortly to be uncovered, then vehicle evacuation may be deemed a more appropriate course of action. This would be achieved with the four wheel drive of St John Ambulance and Rescue or the Lihou tractor and trailer
- It is important that adults in charge of minors should have in their possession a copy of all the minors medical and parental consent forms or have a copy placed with a contact that can be contacted immediately after or during the evacuation process
For an injury requiring outside assistance or hospitalisation, the following Procedure should be followed exactly step by step:
- Contact the emergency services on 999 or 112 and ask for an ambulance using a mobile phone
- Answer accurately and concisely every question they present to you
- Inform them of the sea conditions on the island on both the causeway side and the beach facing towards the Hanois lighthouse
- Contact the warden on 07781 120421
- On arrival of the emergency services an assessment will be made as to the next step but if the injured party is a minor then an adult will need to accompany the minor to hospital
- The parents of a minor should be contacted using the parental and medical consent forms held by the party leaders
- If the removal of an adult, through injury or casualty accompaniment, from a group containing minors results in staffing levels being reduced to an unacceptable level, then complete evacuation should be considered either immediately or as soon as practical
NOTE:
The emergency services have visited the property and have liased with the warden to implement an action plan should an emergency unfold and this action plan is continuously under review. Whenever possible it is always better to wait to evacuate a casualty or group by crossing the causeway when it is dry. This would be done using whatever vehicles were available but primarily the Lihou tractor and trailer and St John Ambulance and Rescue’s four-wheel drive. The use of inappropriate vehicles through unthinking enthusiasm can result in further injury or at best, a delay to effective evacuation. If boats are deemed the best for of transportation due to tide state, then Coastguard will deploy the lifeboat to assist.
