Bird’s-foot

Ornithopus perpusillus
This small annual legume has delicate, pinnate leaves and tiny white or pinkish flowers. Its slender pods cluster together in a way that resembles a bird’s foot, giving the plant its name.
- Habitat: Well-drained, sandy or gravelly grasslands, coastal slopes, open ground.
- When to See: Flowers in late spring to summer; seed pods become more conspicuous later in the season.
- Length: Stems often prostrate, up to ~10–15 cm in spread.
