European Storm Petrel

Hydrobates pelagicus
Our smallest seabird, fluttering gracefully just above the water’s surface. They breed on remote cliffs or islands, generally coming ashore only after dark. Off Lihou, sightings are rare but possible in calm conditions.
- Habitat: Strictly marine, offshore waters; nests in crevices on secluded islands.
- When to See: Mostly in summer; rarely spotted close to shore in daylight.
- Diet / Food: Tiny planktonic crustaceans, small fish, and surface scraps.
- Length: 15–16 cm
