Sand Sedge

Carex arenaria

This sturdy sedge has creeping rhizomes that help stabilise sandy soils. Its stiff, greyish-green leaves often form dense patches on dunes or sandy banks.

  • Habitat: Sand dunes, sandy beaches, or coastal banks.
  • When to See: Leaves and stems most visible year-round; seed spikes appear in summer.
  • Length: Clumps can be 15–30β€―cm tall, spreading via underground rhizomes.
